A Note On Colors:  The colors given are accurate to the best of my ability. Where a color is mentioned, the stamp has been checked against 2 color charts – 167 and 69 stamps each – and a reference file of 200+ dated covers.  The 2 color charts were acquired in 1980 and had previously been matched with Dr. Chase’s original color chart.

Type I Perforated ( Sc. #25 )

4L3, top row copy, WITH INNER LINES. Chase estimated that less than 2500 sheets from plate 3 were perforated noting that:
"...because plate 3 was used to such a very limited extent for the perforated stamps, such copies are of a considerable degree of rarity..."
Great centering for this usually horribly centered issue. Trivial UR corner bend. Very nice WINDSOR OHIO NOV 12 cds. Nice impression and very fresh 1857 claret. Original plating done by Dr. Chase. $
PH

96L4 COVER. Exceptionally nice centering. For those unfamiliar with this stamp, please understand that on virtually all copies of #25, perforations cut the design, usually quite badly. Design on this copy is practically perfectly centered with regards to the perforations.

This position clearly shows the closest spacing that exists on any of the 3c 1851-57 type I stamps. CHASE states:

"The closest spacing on any plate is found on the left pane between 95 and 96L4, being, 1/5mm., measuring at the nearest point between adjacent frame lines, wheras the distance between 96 and 97L4 is 1¼mm., more than 6 times the space in one pair than in the other."

This position also shows as mentioned in CHASE:

"a vertical dash nearly 1mm. long just to the right of the upper end of the right frame line and extending a little above the corner of the stamp."
